The green sturgeon (Acipenser medirostris) and the white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) are two distinct species found on the West Coast of North America. Here are some key differences:
APPEARANCE
Green Sturgeon: These sturgeon have a greenish-gray coloration with five rows of bony plates (scutes) along their backs and sides. Their bright green color stands out against the striking white of their scutes, fin edges, and body. Lateral line presents 23 – 30 scutes.
White Sturgeon: White sturgeon are typically gray or brown (the clearer the water, the darker they seem to get), and they have a more elongated body shape. Their scutes are also present but may appear differently compared to green sturgeon. Lateral scute line will show 38 – 48 scutes.
LIFE HISTORY
Green Sturgeon: They are anadromous, meaning they can live in both fresh and saltwater. They spawn and rear juveniles in rivers, then migrate to saltwater to feed and mature before returning to freshwater to spawn. Green sturgeon live in shallow marine waters and are often found in tidal areas of large river deltas. They are present in the lower Fraser River but are rarely caught.
White Sturgeon: Similar life history in terms of spawning in freshwater (anadromous)but spend more time in freshwater than their green sturgeon relatives. They can also be found on tidal flats and in various habitats like lakes. White sturgeon are often found in the Fraser River, reaching as far upstream as the Nechako River and beyond, as well as in the Columbia River, including the part that flows out of southeast B.C.
CONSERVATION STATUS
Green Sturgeon: These are listed as a species of concern under Canada’s species at risk act (SARA) due to threats such as habitat degradation and blocked access to spawning grounds.
White Sturgeon: Their conservation status is listed as threatened under SARA but they are considered more abundant than green sturgeon.
Both species are fascinating and play important roles in their ecosystems!
