Steelhead season is really getting underway! The high water we experienced last week will pull more steelhead into our local waters. Water conditions are prime – plenty of water to fish and the clarity has been excellent. This is the time when the best steelhead fishing really gets going in the lower mainland. The warm weather that we have been enjoying lately will also warm up the water temperatures – this will increase steelhead activity allowing anglers a better crack at these fish on the fly!
The most widely used method on the local rivers to catch steelhead is float fishing. Float fishing suspends your bait or rigging of choice off the bottom using a float as it drifts down along the current. The angler targets their cast to seams and pockets where they feel a steelhead is likely to be laying in. Roe, prawns and shrimp, as well as dew worms, are good natural baits that provide scent and sight attraction. Wool ties, pink worms (or other soft plastics such as gooey bobs), and colorado blades are excellent artificial lures.
Here is a recent submission from Clayton Jones – he landed this 39″ wild buck on the Chilliwack/Vedder river. After a quick photo, this fish was happily released. What an exceptional steelhead, Clayton – and well done! If you are not aware, Clayton will be beginning his guiding career with Cascade Fishing Adventures this season. Clayton is going to fit in well!
