FISHING SEASONS
Fishing seasons will vary slightly from year to year – these are general timings. You will note that some fisheries overlap with others, often providing a combination fishing trip that allows you to try angling for different fish, and utilizing different methods. For instance, it is possible to salmon and sturgeon fish on the same day.
Sturgeon – March through November – our most sought after fish due to sheer size, power and fighting ability.
Chinook – (Kings) Late July, through October – bar fishing, late season pulling plugs, spoons.
Coho – (Silvers) late September to early November – fly, spin, or float fishing.
Chum – October and November – fly, spin and float fishing.
Pink – Available early September to early October on odd numbered years (ie. 2017) – flyfishing and spinning on light gear is best!
Steelhead – December through April – fly best in March and April, spin and drift fish December through April.
Trout – October through April – fly fishing best method.
Sturgeon fishing is our most popular fishing adventure booked by our guests. This is because sturgeon offer unique and incredible sportfishing qualities, grow to immense sizes and sturgeon are in limited locations – only a few rivers on the west coast of North America offer fishable numbers. Our largest sturgeon was captured, tagged and released in August 2006 – it taped 11 feet 3 inches fork length and is estimated at 895 lbs.
The season for sturgeon is generally March through November. We do not offer winter sturgeon fishing as the weather is unpredictable, and cold water temperatures greatly diminish the sturgeon’s sportfishing qualities.
Sturgeon are under catch and release regulations, and are also a species under study. Since 1995, the Ministry of Environment has taken on the task of learning more about the white sturgeon on the Fraser River. Marc Laynes, owner of Cascade Fishing Adventures Inc., participated in the baseline study work of the sturgeon’s population dynamics and spawning locations and habits.
A word about fishing the upper river or canyon – we have been fishing this distant section long before any other guide service on the river. We know this section intimately, and fish it accordingly. We do our best to try and fish this section with every guest booked on a multi-day trip – there is no extra cost to fish the canyon when you book a multi-day fishing package. However, if the river or fishing conditions do not warrant it, we will choose not to fish the upper reaches.
A single day trip to the canyon is a memorable way to fully enjoy the Fraser river sturgeon experience and can be booked anytime during the sturgeon fishing season. Please visit our website at www.cascadefishingadventures.com/complete-fishing-packages
Salmon fishing is very popular. Chinook are our summer fish of choice and are generally available late July through mid October. Coho and chum salmon have become increasingly popular, particularly with the fly fishing angler. Spin and float fishing are also very effective methods for chum and coho.
Pink salmon means it is time to get out (September) and really catch fish. Pinks return to the Fraser River systems by the millions in odd numbered years (next major run is 2017) and offer excellent fishing opportunities with all methods for anglers young and old, regardless of fishing experience!
We do not participate in the sockeye fishery on the Fraser – foul hooking or lining fish (also known locally as “flossing”) is just not our specialty and we do not endorse the methods used in this fishery for any fish, on any rivers.
