STURGEON FISHING

Fall months are always regarded as great months to fish for sturgeon. Shorter days make for cooler water – this sends a signal to sturgeon that winter is approaching and it’s time to fatten up. Fall-run chinook, chum and coho enter local waters providing plenty of dietary options for sturgeon. This is a great time for sturgeon anglers to use roe and any trim from any fresh salmon they have kept for the freezer.

SALMON FISHING

September through November bring excellent salmon fishing opportunities on the local tributaries. Chinook, chum and coho return in good numbers in the hatchery systems such as the Chilliwack/Vedder and the Chehalis, to name two. These systems support retention fisheries for all three species (check regs for in-season changes) that are fished by float fishing roe or artificials, casting spinning gear with spoons, spinners and jigs, or with fly fishing gear and techniques. These two rivers are easily accessed and fished on foot. The Harrison river provides further fishing opportunities but is more suited for boat access than the other two rivers. Here, chinooks must be released but often there are retention opportunities for chum and hatchery coho. Again, casting spoons, spinners or jigs work well, as does fly fishing. I personally enjoy fly fishing for coho as I find the result worthy of the challenge. Coho offer plenty of excitement whether caught on spinning or fly gear. Chum are the water buffaloes – they can pull for an eternity and make some great runs. Both salmon are worthy of eating when they are fresh.

It is a pleasure to have spent 35 years guiding and running boats on this amazing waterway.

Come join us for a day of sturgeon or salmon fishing on the river, and experience all that the Fraser river has to offer!

Have fun, enjoy what we have today, and remember, you can’t catch them from the couch.

We look forward to spending quality time in the boat with all of you soon!

Best wishes to you all, from all of us!

Cheers!
