Hello everyone – we hope the Summer of 2025 found you all outside enjoying some good fishing!
Pink salmon, (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) also nicknamed “humpies” are a dominant run of salmon in our southern BC waters, particularly the Fraser river in odd numbered years. In even years they are dominant in northern waters such as the Skeena. Here they are seen enroute to their natal streams to spawn, die and carry on the cycle of their existence. Averaging 4-7 lbs, they create an enormous biomass that provides for many other species in the ecosystem including various birds, coyotes and bears here in the valley, not to mention in-river insect and fish species.
They gain their nickname from the conspicuous hump that males develop during their spawning migration. The pink salmon life cycle is the shortest of the 5 Pacific salmon species, living for only 2 years. Once eggs are laid and fertilized in the redd during October, the eggs will overwinter in clean gravel – fry will emerge in spring and after absorbing their egg sack, will begin the outbound migration for the ocean, living in saltwater for just over a year before heading back to complete the cycle.
They’re not the largest or strongest of the salmon, but you can’t deny their persistence in effort or in numbers.
It is a pleasure to have spent 35 years guiding and running boats on this amazing waterway.
Come join us for a day of sturgeon or salmon fishing on the river, and experience all that the Fraser river has to offer!
Have fun, enjoy what we have today, and remember to get outdoors and enjoy some Nature!
We look forward to spending quality time in the boat with all of you soon!
Cheers from all of us at Cascade Fishing Adventures!
Cheers!
