What fishing opportunities currently exist?

At this time of year, beginning in mid December through March and into April, it is all about steelhead and trout!  There are few fish in the freshwater world that conjure wild eyes and shaky hands more often than the steelhead.  There is the magic, the mystery and the stunning beauty of a steelhead.  I can personally attest to this – many sport fish are beautiful (aren’t they all?) and they all have their little niches in our angling hearts, but nothing causes the trembles in my hands and a thumping heart more than hooking and even losing, a steelhead.  And to have had the experience of catching them on a fly rod and on a double hander, offered another dimension that is crazily addicting!

There are a number of rivers that provide some terrific experiences, all revolving around steelhead and trout.  Steelhead exist in several rivers in the Fraser valley and can be caught float fishing (drifting gear under a float) and by fly fishing – whether that be with a single handed rod or a spey rod – it’s your choice and both work well.  Most of these trips will be walk and wade trips and can be half day or full day trips.  If you don’t have any gear, don’t worry – we have it all here for you.

Cascade Steelhead Fishing ImageWith the timing of the season, weather can play a role in determining whether you will fish one river over another and this is where the experience of a guide will help.  Not to mention, we can put you onto fishy water, something that is not always easy to spot if you are new to river fishing, or the river itself.  At certain times, we will slip out in the jet boat and find steelhead and cutthroat trout in a variety of places, offering you a big piece of water in splendid surroundings with nobody else around.  It is easy to “get lost” while fishing on the big river, there is so much to look at.  And when you least expect it which often seems to be the way,  you suddenly see your float disappear, or you feel the electrical tug of a fish!

Regardless of the weather conditions, we can find good water to fish from an assortment of rivers and locations to give you the best shot at finding one of these legendary fish.  And often you will find that other fish will provide some good action in between such as cutthroat trout, dolly varden/bull trout and rocky mountain whitefish.

Another option we offer is a truly adventurous day trip with spectacular scenery that will leave you gazing at your surroundings more than your rod tip.  Remotely located and accessible by jetboat, we will put you into a setting that will provide you with a remarkable angling experience.  We love to fly fish at this time of year and would love to see you catch wild rainbow trout, cutthroat trout and dolly-varden (char) on a fly rod, even if you are new to fly fishing.  Often the trout are very willing, and even if they’re not, you won’t notice too much – you’re too busy gawking at the scenery and the river!  Contact us if this adventure appeals to you and we will show you how you can immerse yourself in that experience.
