Here we are in the middle of June and we are enjoying some good river fishing conditions on the Fraser river. This is mainly due to another previous winter bringing a low snowpack as well as three solid stretches of hot weather since April. While we are currently experiencing some much needed rain throughout much of B.C., the river continues to hold its own and stay in great shape.
Sturgeon fishing has been fair to good the last month or so, but we’ve also seen some days where its been tough to get a fish to the boat. It really works on your patience, but there is really not a lot you can do – except, keep fishing!
Sturgeon handling is an important topic at the moment. Fish over 150 cm cannot be brought into the boat, and all fish over that length must be kept in the water. Please give as much care as you can to these amazing fish that live in our back yard.
Looking ahead, we should see some good sturgeon fishing once the weather begins to stabilize again and we see some stretches of steady weather.
Chinook salmon fishing on the other hand is up in the air. It is anticipated that we will see an August 1st opening for chinooks.
During a recent break in the action, Rob and I enjoyed a few days fishing for trout in the BC interior. BC has a “zillion” great lakes to fish and the trout fly fishing opportunities in this province are endless. There is something magical about spending time on a lake with the fly rod, catching a few trout, and enjoying the campfire afterwards and getting to do it all over again the next day.
Some of the best sturgeon fishing of the season is coming upon us, and we’ll keep everyone updated on how things progress. Until then, good fishing!
